Hema Malini made her debut in the year 1968 with the film Sapnon Ka Saudagar. Raj Kapoor was seen with her in this film. Since this was Hema's first film and she had to romance an actor 26 years older than her, the actress was very nervous about this.

In an interview to Laharen Retro, Hema Malini admitted that that moment was very strange for her. At that time Raj Kapoor was 40 years old while Hema Malini was around 20 years old. The actress told that she was very nervous initially. Then with the help of director Mahesh Kaul, she was somehow able to shoot the romantic scene. Hema Malini admitted that it was strange to be cast opposite the Greatest Showman, but she was not in a position to question it.

The director helped Hema

Mumtaz was initially cast in this film but later this role was given to Hema. Apart from her, Sanjeev Kumar and Dharmendra were in the film. Through them, she wanted to experience the fame and success that she had never seen. The actress said that she comes from a strict family and she found it very difficult to do romantic scenes with Raj Kapoor in the film. However, this film proved to be a failure at the box office.

Mother used to choose films for Hema Malini

Initially, Hema's mother Jaya Chakraborty used to select films for her career. In the same interview, Hema told that Raj Kapoor came to her with the offer of Satyam Shivam Sundaram. Talking about the film, Hema said that Raj Kapoor came to me and said this is a film and I know that you will not do it. But I want you to do it. Still, I know that you will not do it. At that time, Hema's mother was also sitting there and she said that yes, Hema will not do this film.
