Aadhaar card is issued by UIDAI. You can also get Aadhaar card made for minors and newborn children. No rules have been made yet regarding how to surrender or close the Aadhaar card when a person dies.

This means that you cannot surrender or cancel the Aadhaar card. However, UIDAI has provided the facility of Aadhaar lock to keep the Aadhaar card secure.  

After locking the Aadhaar card, it cannot be used. To use the Aadhaar card, it must first be unlocked. If someone in your family dies, you can lock his/her Aadhaar card or keep it safely so that no one can misuse it.

how to lock aadhar card

  • First of all, you have to go to the official website of UIDAI (uidai.gov.in) and click on the option of myaadhaar.
  • Now click on Service and select the option 'Lock/Unlock Biometrics'.
  • After this a new page will open on the screen. Here you have to enter the Aadhaar number () and captcha and select Send OTP.  
  • Now enter the OTP received on the registered mobile number, after which select the lock option from Lock/Unlock the biometric data.

After this your Aadhaar card will be locked. Similarly, to unlock the Aadhaar card, you will have to follow the same steps and select the unlock option.
