The World Health Organization published its latest report about smoking rate reductions on February 3, 2025 and India displayed notable achievements among nations. The WHO report demonstrates a major decline in smoking prevalence in India because the national smoking rate decreased by 12% during the last ten years. Strict tobacco restrictions and health outreach programs and smokeless tobacco choice expansion serve as primary factors behind this decline.

Key Drivers of the Decline:

The Indian government demonstrates strong commitment to smoking prevention through multiple anti-tobacco policies such as increased tobacco taxes and total smoking restrictions in public areas and nationwide campaigns about tobacco risks. Cities along with educational facilities that established tobacco-free zones helped decrease the numbers of smokers in the population.

The decreasing smoking rates have resulted from the increasing availability of nicotine replacement therapies which now include both e-cigarettes and smokeless tobacco products. The youth population has shown significant interest in these substitute smoking products. Health experts maintain a warnig stance about the complete safety of e-cigarettes as an alternative to traditional tobacco use.
