Dehradun AQI: After the fireworks on Diwali, the level of air pollution in Dehradun and Rishikesh had increased rapidly, which had a bad effect on the city's air. On the day of Diwali, the Air Quality Index (AQI) in Dehradun had gone above 300, which indicates very bad air condition. However, two days later on Sunday, the situation improved and the AQI of the capital came down to 133, due to which the level of pollution was recorded to have decreased significantly.
This improvement in the air quality of Doon, which is known for its clean air, has brought news of relief. After Diwali, the air here had come in the bad category, but within two days it has improved significantly. Amit Pokhriyal, regional officer of the Pollution Control Board, which monitors air pollution, said that this time the level of pollution after Diwali was relatively less compared to previous years. Despite this, the air of the city remained in the bad category for two days due to pollution caused by fireworks.
PM 2.5 levels also fell
The level of particulate matter (PM) 2.5, which is a measure of fine particles in the air, reached 500 on Diwali. This level is considered extremely harmful for health, especially for children, the elderly and people with respiratory problems. This level also fell to between 133 and 250 in a span of two days. Experts say that this improvement has been seen due to increased stability in the air and regional measures.
Rishikesh, where air pollution had increased during Diwali, has now come to a better condition due to pollution control efforts. Water sprinkling was done through drones in Rishikesh, which settled down the particles present in the air and the air quality improved rapidly. On Sunday, the AQI level of Rishikesh was recorded at 84, which falls in the good and moderate category. The level of PM 2.5 also remained between 84 to 98, which is considered safe in terms of air quality.
Effect of pollution control measures
Several pollution control measures were taken in Dehradun and Rishikesh, including sprinkling of water from drones and regular cleaning of roads. Experts believe that sprinkling of water helps in reducing the level of micro particles present in the air, which improves the air quality. Pollution Control Board officials said that the effect of these timely steps is clearly visible. Along with government efforts, the weather has also contributed positively to the improvement in air quality after Diwali.
Amidst the concerns arising due to air pollution after Diwali, the improvement in air quality has brought relief to everyone. According to experts, it is necessary to be vigilant for clean air and environmental protection in hilly areas like Uttarakhand. It is challenging to control the pollution that increases during festivals, but it can be controlled to a great extent with effective steps.
Amit Pokhriyal, regional officer of the Pollution Control Board, said that this time the pollution level on Diwali was much lower than in previous years. The use of drones, sprinkling of water on roads and other control measures to reduce pollution have shown a positive effect. It is hoped that similar steps will be taken in the coming years as well.
