According to Fox News, Donald Trump has got majority in the US election results. Kamala Harris and Donald Trump gave a tough competition to each other in the race for the White House. The results of the US election are important not only for Americans but also for Indians. Indians are closely monitoring the possible changes in the H-1B Visa program and its annual 85,000 visa limit.

H-1B Visa rules
Under Donald Trump, H-1B eligibility rules were tightened, salary limits increased, and cancellation rates rose from 6 per cent in 2015 to 24 per cent in 2018. These steps were taken to protect American jobs. Meanwhile, Harris supports increasing the H-1B visa limit, which is currently limited to 65,000 regular and 20,000 advanced degree visas. Green Card Indian professionals on H-1B visas face a long wait for employment-based green cards due to per-country caps. They may have to wait up to 84 years. Harris has co-sponsored the Fairness for High-Skilled Immigrants Act to remove these limits, which could speed up green card approvals for Indian nationals. Meanwhile, Trump's merit-based points proposal would prioritise applicants based on skills, particularly in STEM fields, but could harm others. Student Visa Indian students contribute about $7.6 billion annually. However, under Trump, the F-1 Student Visa faced greater scrutiny, and limits were proposed for Optional Practical Training (OPT), hurting job prospects. Harris supports OPT and has advocated extending its duration, which could benefit STEM graduates.
