US Election 2024  More than 200 languages are spoken in New York, but only four other languages besides English have been included in the ballot papers in the presidential election to be held here. Bengali is representing the Indian language in this list. Michael J. Ryan, Executive Director of the Election Board of NYC, said that Chinese, Spanish, Korean and Bengali are included as Asian languages.

Indians expressed happiness

Subhashesh, an Indian-origin person who works as a sales agent in a Times Square store, has expressed happiness over this. He said that his father, who lives in Queens area, will no longer face any problem when he goes to vote. He said that Indians living here know English, but there are many people in our community who are comfortable in their native language. This helps them at the polling booth.

This happened for the first time

The South Asian community in New York's Queens area first received ballot papers translated into Bengali in 2013. The inclusion of Bengali-language ballot papers comes nearly two years after the federal government ordered language assistance to South Asian minorities under a provision of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Dr. Avinash Gupta, president of the Federation of Indian Associations, says this helps the Indian community.
