Lucknow. Four crore two lakh people consume alcohol in Uttar Pradesh. Their age ranges from 10 years to 75 years. 23.8 percent of the total population of the state is consuming alcohol. Uttar Pradesh is at the first place among the top ten states where 16 crore people are suffering from the problem of alcohol.
This data on drug addiction is five years old, but this report has been given in the updated survey and study of National Drug Dependence Treatment Center and All India Institute of Medical Sciences. No new survey has been conducted on this since the year 2019.
Minister expressed concern
The Excise Department does not promote drug abuse. On the occasion of International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, in a symposium organised by the Prohibition Department at the International Buddhist Research Institute, Gomti Nagar on Wednesday, Excise and Prohibition Minister Nitin Agarwal expressed concern over the growing drug addiction among the youth.
He emphasized on taking forward the campaign of drug-free India. He said that the Excise Department never does anything to promote any kind of drug addiction. The reason for drug addiction can be many factors including life style, peer pressure, loneliness. We have to make people aware against drug addiction.
Principal Secretary of Social Welfare Department, Dr. Hariom, emphasized on being more alert during adolescence.

- 10.7 lakh people use drugs.
- 3.5 lakh people are addicted to sedatives and sedatives.
