The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), run by Tesla CEO Elon Musk, has gained access to sensitive financial data, including Social Security and Medicare customer payment systems. The move by DOGE, a Trump administration task force appointed to find ways to fire federal workers, cut programs and reduce federal regulations, means it may have broad leeway to access critical taxpayer data, among other things.

The group's access to the vast federal payment system was first reported by The Associated Press. Two people who spoke to the Associated Press spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly.

Letter sent to Trump's Treasury Secretary

  • Ron Wyden of Oregon, the highest-ranking Democrat on the Senate Finance Committee, sent a letter on Friday to Trump's Treasury Secretary Scott Bessant expressing concern that "officials associated with Musk may have intended to illegally access these payment systems to intercept any number of payments."
  • Now, the Musk-led government efficiency department has broad access to sensitive taxpayer data.
  • Regarding this, Ron Wyden, the leading Democrat MP on the Senate Finance Committee, has expressed deep concern and he has also written a letter to Finance Secretary Scott Besant on this issue.

‘There is a risk of serious damage to the economy’

The news comes at a time when acting Deputy Secretary of the Treasury David LeBrick recently resigned from his post after 30 years of service. In a letter sent to Treasury employees on Friday, LeBrick said, "The financial service performs some of the most important work in the government.

LeBrick added, “Our work may be unknown to most, but that doesn't mean it isn't exceptionally important. I am grateful to be able to work with some of the best and most talented operations staff in the country.”

Reacting to LeBric's resignation, Musk wrote on social media that Finance Department officials have never refused to approve any payment, even if it was for fraud or terrorist groups.
