The Philippines is planning to deploy U.S. Typhoon medium-range missiles near its border with China, a move China has called provocative and a Chinese official has said would escalate tensions in the region. The Philippines' top military official said in Manila on Monday that the military is planning to buy medium-range missiles amid rising tensions with China in the South China Sea. “Yes, there are such plans,” Lt. Gen. Roy Galido said.
China opposes US aid
The US deployed its medium-range missile system Typhoon in northern Philippines in April. Also, the soldiers of both the countries are jointly training for the possible use of these weapons. China has been continuously opposing US military assistance to the Philippines.
Arms race will intensify: China
China is particularly concerned by the deployment of the Typhoon system. Under President Joe Biden, the US has strengthened military alliances in the Indo-Pacific region to counter China, including any confrontation over Taiwan. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said the Philippines' deployment of the weapon would intensify geopolitical confrontation and an arms race.
Philippines remained less with friendly countries
Philippines Lt. Gen. Roy Galido said the military is working with not only the US but also other friendly countries on a long list of weapon platforms that are being planned to be acquired. He also said the Philippines will not necessarily buy the Typhon system.
Protection of the Exclusive Economic Zone
The Philippines' defense plan also includes the protection of its Exclusive Economic Zone, which stretches 200 nautical miles. Galido said it is vital that the Army coordinate with the Philippine Navy and the Philippine Air Force to project its strength along this border.
The US deployed the medium-range missile system in the Philippines on 11 April 2024 this year. This missile was equipped with mid-range capability.
