Bangladesh's Yunus government on Monday issued an arrest warrant against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The Bangladesh government today wrote a diplomatic letter to India asking it to send Hasina back to Dhaka.

Warrant issued against former ministers including Hasina

The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) of Bangladesh has issued arrest warrants against Hasina and several former cabinet ministers, advisers, and military and civilian officials for crimes against humanity and genocide.

Hasina came to India after fleeing from Bangladesh

Let us tell you that Sheikh Hasina has been living in India since August 5. She fled the country a few months ago after violent protests led by students in Bangladesh, after which her government fell.

Extradition demand from India

Tauhid Hossain, foreign affairs adviser to Bangladesh's interim government, said we have sent a verbal note to the Indian government stating Bangladesh wants him back for judicial process. Earlier in the morning, Home Adviser Jahangir Alam said his office has sent a letter to the foreign ministry to facilitate the extradition of its ousted prime minister from India.

Alam further said that an extradition treaty already exists between Bangladesh and India and under it Hasina can be brought back to Bangladesh. In his address to the nation on the completion of 100 days of the interim government last month, Bangladesh's Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus had said that he would seek Hasina's extradition.

Every murder will be accounted for: Yunus

Bangladesh's chief adviser said that we have to ensure justice in every murder. We will also ask India to send back Sheikh Hasina. Yunus, who took office on August 8, claimed that about 1,500 people, including students and workers, were killed while 19,931 others were injured during protests against the Hasina government.

At the same time, legal adviser Asif Nazrul had reportedly said that Bangladesh would strongly oppose if India tries to deny Hasina's extradition citing any provision in the treaty. In an interview to PTI in Dhaka in September, Yunus had said that India should refrain from making any political comment on Hasina.
