Kyiv: President Volodymyr Zelensky on Sunday called on U.S. President Joe Biden and Chinese leader Xi Jinping to attend a peace summit next month as Ukraine struggles to fend off Russia's relentless attacks.
Ukraine hopes to host as many countries as possible at Kiev-led talks in Switzerland next month. The meeting is aimed at unifying global opinion on how to stop the war and putting pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin. Putin has not been invited to the meeting.
More than 80 countries will participate in the meeting
Zelensky said that more than 80 countries will participate in the meeting. Zelensky said that I am appealing to those leaders of the world who are still away from the global efforts of the Global Peace Summit. Please strive for real peace.
'This conference will show the world who is in favor of ending the war'
Zelensky said the summit would show who in the world really wants to end the war. Kiev in its peace plan is calling for a full withdrawal of Russian troops and the restoration of its internationally recognised borders, which Moscow does not consider a proper start to talks. Last week, Russian sources told Reuters that Putin was ready to stop the war in Ukraine with a ceasefire agreement that recognises the current battleground lines.
