India voted in favour of the UN General Assembly resolution calling for Israel's withdrawal from the Palestinian territories occupied since 1967, including East Jerusalem, and reiterating the call for a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in West Asia. A draft resolution on a peaceful solution to the Palestine question, introduced by Senegal, was adopted by an overwhelming majority in the 193-member General Assembly on Tuesday.

These countries voted against the proposal

India was among the 157 countries that voted in its favour. However, Argentina, Hungary, Israel, Micronesia, Nauru, Palau, Papua New Guinea and the US voted against it. Cameroon, Czechia, Ecuador, Georgia, Paraguay, Ukraine and Uruguay were absent.

Attempts to change demographics were rejected

The resolution reiterated its call for the restoration of a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in West Asia without delay, on the basis of relevant UN resolutions. Through the resolution, the General Assembly reaffirmed its support for a two-State solution for Israel and Palestine in peace and security within recognised borders based on the pre-1967 borders in accordance with international law, and rejected any attempt at demographic or territorial change in the Gaza Strip.

Israel must fulfill its obligations

Through the resolution, the General Assembly reaffirmed its support for a two-state solution of Israel and Palestine living together in peace and security within recognized borders based on the pre-1967 borders in accordance with international law. The resolution also demanded that Israel strictly abide by its obligations under international law.

Israel's obligations are mentioned in the advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice of July 19, 2024. It said that Israel should end its illegal presence in the occupied Palestinian territory as soon as possible. Immediately stop all new settlements and expel all settlers from the occupied Palestinian territory. It called for an end to Israel's illegal acts.

The Gaza Strip is an integral part of Palestine

The resolution said the Gaza Strip is an integral part of Palestine occupied in 1967. The resolution stressed the need for an immediate and complete cessation of all acts of violence, including military attacks, destruction and terrorist activities, as well as incitement and provocation.

India has also voted in favour of another resolution in the General Assembly. This resolution calls on Israel to vacate the Golan Heights. This resolution was passed with 97 votes. 64 countries abstained from voting and eight voted against. The countries that voted against include Australia, Canada, Israel, the United Kingdom and the United States.
