
Islamabad. Pakistan on Tuesday raised the minimum legal age of marriage for Christian men and women to 18 years. This increase in age has been done after amending the law enacted in 1872. President Asif Ali Zardari has approved the Christian Marriage (Amendment) Act 2024 under Article 75 of the Constitution.According to Geo News report, this act has been implemented after amendment in section 60 of Christian Marriage Act 1872. Under the new law, the minimum age for both men and women in Christian community has been fixed at 18 years. Earlier, the age of Christian men and women was fixed at 16 and 13 years respectively.Earlier this month, the Pakistan National Assembly approved by voice vote the proposal to raise the minimum legal age for marriage to 18. Human rights activists and various Christian organizations have welcomed the increase in the minimum age of marriage for Christians.
There should be an open trial of the May 9 riots case in Pakistan: Qureshi
Former Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi has demanded an open hearing instead of in-camera in the ATC in the case related to the May 9 riots. Qureshi, the vice president of jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan's party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), is accused of inciting the attack on Islamabad's Shadman police station.
