Nobel Prize 2024 Medicine: Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun have been jointly awarded the Nobel Prize for Physiology 2024. The Nobel Academy at Karolinska Institute announced this on Monday (October 7, 2024).
This year's award is the 115th Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine since 1901. Only 13 of the 229 winners are women. The 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics will be announced on Tuesday, followed by the Chemistry Prize on Wednesday.
Why were these scientists given this award?
According to an official statement, the scientists were awarded the prize for discovering a fundamental principle that regulates gene activity. Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun were interested in how different cell types develop. They discovered microRNAs, a new class of small RNA molecules that play an important role in gene regulation.
