Russia : At least 70 people were injured when nine carriages of a passenger train derailed in Russia's Far North region. The incident took place near the small town of Inta in the Komi Republic. The head of the Komi Republic, Vladimir Uyba, said the train was carrying 215 passengers.

Five coaches of the train derailed

"Seventy people were injured, seven of them seriously," he said. He said the last five carriages of the train derailed, but officials did not immediately give the cause of the accident.

Russia has the world's largest rail network

Photos published by Russian state media showed several vehicles lying in a ditch on the edge of a forest. Transport accidents are not uncommon in Russia, but they are less common on railways, as the world's largest country has a vast rail network. Amid the war, Russia has been facing incidents of sabotage on its railroads, which the military uses to move equipment into Ukraine.

Train 511 was travelling between Vorkuta and the Black Sea port of Novorossiysk in north-eastern Komi, above the Arctic Circle.

The government is collecting information about the victims

"Emergency services have been dispatched to the scene. Measures are being taken to assist passengers," Russian Railways said on Telegram. "Information about the victims is being clarified. Traffic on the section has been suspended."
