New Delhi. Gautam Gambhir has returned to Kolkata Knight Riders this year. Under his captaincy, Gambhir made this team champion twice. This year he is the mentor of the team. After his arrival, the team has shown strong performance and became the first team to reach the playoffs of IPL 2024. After taking Kolkata to the playoffs, Gambhir has revealed his biggest mistake.
Under Gambhir's captaincy, Kolkata won the IPL title in 2012 and 2014. In 2014, the team bought Suryakumar Yadav who remained with the team till 2017. Gambhir also left Kolkata in 2017. Gambhir has now said that he and the team management could not use Suryakumar's talent properly.
Gambhir said this
Talking to Sportskeeda, Gambhir said that he will always regret not being able to use Suryakumar's talent properly. Gambhir said, "It is the job of a leader to identify the best talent and tell it to the world. After captaining Kolkata for seven years, if I regret anything, it is that I and our team could not use Suryakumar's talent properly."
Gambhir said that the reason for this was the team combination. He said, "You can play only one player at number-3. And as a leader you also have to think about the other players in the playing-11. He would have been more effective at number-3, but he was equally good at number-7."
Always stay ready
Gambhir said that Suryakumar is not affected by the number because no matter which number you play him at, he is always ready. He said, "Whether you play him at number 6 or 7, or make him sit on the bench. He is always happy and keeps smiling and is always ready to perform well. That is why we made him the vice-captain."
Suryakumar made his debut for Kolkata in 2014 and played till 2017. But after this he came to Mumbai and became an important part of the team. Currently, he is the number-1 batsman in T20 and is in strong form this season as well.
