India is a country where there is no dearth of food lovers. The mark of unity in diversity is not only seen in the language and lifestyle here, but also in the food. Samosa, Kachori, Pakodas are eaten here with great fondness, but if we tell you that these favorite foods of yours can make you a victim of diabetes, will you believe it? This is not what we say, but the Indian Medical Council of Research i.e. ICMR itself says this.
In fact, a recent study found that a low-AGE (Advanced Glycation End Products) diet can contribute to reducing the risk of diabetes. India has previously been termed the diabetes capital of the world, where more than 101 million people suffer from this disease. In such a situation, this recent study is a matter of concern. Let us know in detail about this new study-
What does the study say?
The study, conducted in collaboration with ICMR and Madras Diabetes Research Foundation, Chennai, focused on 38 overweight and obese adults aged 25 to 45 years, all of whom had a body mass index (BMI) of 23 or more. The researchers compared the effects of two diets, high-AGE and low-AGE, over a period of 12 weeks. AGEs are harmful compounds that form when foods are cooked at high temperatures, especially in processed and fried foods.
These compounds are known to contribute to inflammation, insulin resistance, and other health problems, increasing the risk of diseases like diabetes and heart disease.
Here is the conclusion?
The people involved in this study followed both types of diets for 12 weeks. The findings of this study published in the International Journal of Food Sciences and Nutrition were promising. People on the low-AGE diet had significantly improved insulin sensitivity, measured by a test called the Oral Disposition Index (DIO). Poor insulin sensitivity is a key factor in the development of type 2 diabetes . Insulin sensitivity means how well the body uses insulin (hormone) to lower blood sugar.
People with low-AGE diet had lower blood sugar levels 30 minutes after eating . Along with this, the level of AGE in their blood also decreased. On the contrary, its level was found to be higher in people with high-AGE diet, which can increase the risk of diabetes and heart disease.
Researchers said in the study that the following foods can be harmful due to high AGE content -
- Fried foods: chips, fried chicken, samosas, pakoras
- Baked foods: cookies, cakes, crackers
- Processed foods: ready-made meals, margarine, mayonnaise,
- Animal-based foods cooked at high temperatures: grilled or roasted meats such as bacon, beef, and poultry
- Nuts: Dry fruits, roasted walnuts, sunflower seeds
