What does the report say?
According to the report, harmful chemicals have been identified in some of the cake samples tested, which can cause cancer. Food Security Commissioner Srinivas K has warned bakeries across the state against using unsafe chemicals and additives. Out of the 235 cake samples tested, 12 were found to have artificial colours like Allura Red, Sunset Yellow FCF, Ponceau 4R, Tartrazine and Carmoisine, all of which were present in quantities that were above the prescribed safety limits.
Cancer causing agent found in these cakes
Concerns have increased after these chemicals were found in cakes like Red Velvet and Black Forest. These chemicals can cause cancer and other serious health risks. Also, excessive use of these additives can have a negative impact on mental and physical health.
How do artificial colours pose a risk of cancer?
Animal research has indicated that some artificial colors may increase the risk of cancer. In animal studies with high doses, an increase in brain tumors was observed. Erythrosine, a controversial red color, contributed to an increase in the incidence of thyroid tumors in rats.
Apart from this, colors like Red 40, Yellow 5 and Yellow 6 may contain carcinogenic impurities like benzindene, 4-aminobiphenyl and 4-aminoazobenzene, which have been found to cause cancer in various research studies. However, experts have warned that the findings of animal research have no relation to the risks for humans. Let us tell you that earlier in Bengaluru too, due to health concerns, the use of artificial colors like Rhodamine-B was banned in street food like cotton candy and "Gobi Manchurian".
