New Delhi: Former Chairman of Tata Sons Ratan Tata passed away last night on 9 October. He took his last breath at the age of 86 in Mumbai's Breach Candy Hospital. Even though he is no longer among us, the country will always remember the work done by him. One of those works was to bring the world's cheapest car Tata Nano for the low income group. Here we are telling you how Ratan Tata got the idea of making Tata Nano.

Ratan Tata witnessed this incident

Ratan Tata had told in an interview that he used to roam the streets of the city in his luxury car. Once in the heavy rain of Mumbai, he saw a family of four travelling on a scooter. That family was travelling facing a lot of trouble and was also trying unsuccessfully to avoid the rain. The children sitting between the parents on the scooter had somehow adjusted themselves. Looking at them, it seemed as if their condition was like a sandwich.

The idea of making a small car came

After seeing a family riding a scooter getting drenched in the rain, Ratan Tata thought how good it would have been if they had a small car in which they could travel comfortably sitting on a seat. Then they would not have to worry about dust and rain. After this incident, he started working on bringing the world's cheapest car, which everyone knows as Tata Nano.

Tata Nano launched in the year 2008

Ratan Tata fulfilled his dream of bringing a small and affordable car for the low income group in the year 2008. He presented Tata Nano to the public at the Delhi Auto Expo held at Pragati Maidan, Delhi on 10 January 2008. The price of its basic model was kept at one lakh rupees. During this, Ratan Tata had said that he wanted to provide a better means of transport to Indian families at a low cost.

In 2009, he personally handed over the keys to the first customer

Looking at the demand for Nano, Ratan Tata decided to give away the first one lakh cars through lottery. He himself handed over the keys to the first customer of Tata Nano on 17 July 2009. Its first customer was Ashok Raghunath, an employee of the Customs Department.

Why was Tata Nano in the news?

There are many reasons behind Tata Nano being in the news. At the time when it was launched, no company had a family car at such a low price. Every person who had the money to buy a bike could buy it. Not only this, after its launch, this car became the dream of every middle class family. People started talking about buying this instead of buying a bike. At the same time, it became the world's cheapest car with many features for Rs 1 lakh.

Production stopped in 2019

After landing on the roads of India in 2009, its speed slowed down a lot by 2019. The situation became such that not even a single Tata Nano was sold in the first nine months of 2019. Only one unit of this car was sold that whole year. After the sales of Tata Nano fell completely, its production was stopped.

When Ratan Tata accepted wrong marketing of Nano

Tata Nano was launched in 2008. At the time of its launch, Ratan Tata had admitted that rising input costs like steel, tyres and other parts could affect the price of Nano, but even then he remained committed to providing the cheapest car under Rs 1 lakh. Ratan Tata had said that when we started working on this four years ago, we all knew that the input prices have increased a lot. I want to announce today that the dealer price of the standard car will actually be only Rs 1 lakh... A promise is a promise and that is what we want to give you.
