Holika Dahan is performed on the full moon day of Phalgun month to remember the victory of good over evil. According to the story, Prahlad, son of the demon Hiranyakashyap, was a great devotee of Lord Vishnu, but Hiranyakashyap did not like this at all. He entrusted the task of turning child Prahlad away from devotion to God to his sister Holika, who had the boon that fire could not burn her body. To kill Bhaktaraj Prahlad, Holika entered the fire taking him in her lap. But due to the greatness of Prahlad's devotion and God's grace, Holika herself got burnt in the fire. There was no harm to Prahlad's body in the fire. Since then Holika Dahan is done on the first day of Holi.
