In Shrimaddevibhagvat Purana, it is mentioned when Mother Ganga is returning to heaven. According to this book, Lord Vishnu had told Narad ji about this. Lord Shri Hari told Narad ji that after 5000 years of Kaliyug, when sins on earth will increase a lot, then religion will start to suffer. Greed and lust will reside in people's minds and people's sins will increase so much that even bathing in the Ganga will not benefit them. Then Mother Ganga will get angry with the people of the earth and will return to heaven again.
