World COPD Day 2024:  Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a condition in which there is a blockage in the respiratory tract and the person is unable to breathe properly. In this condition, mucus can accumulate in the lungs and they can also get damaged. World COPD Day is celebrated on 20 November to make people aware about this disease (World COPD Day 2024 Significance).

People have many questions about this disease, such as whether this disease can be cured and how it can be managed (How to Cure COPD). To know the answers to these questions, we spoke to Dr. Aarti Sinha (Consultant at Elvi Health). Let's know what she said about this.

Can COPD be completely cured?

Responding to this question, Dr Sinha said that no, COPD cannot be completely cured. That is, it is an incurable disease. However, it can be managed by making some changes in the lifestyle so that it does not take a more serious form.

How can you manage COPD?

  • Healthy food- Include foods rich in antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, fiber, vitamins and minerals in your diet. Also, eliminate processed foods and sugar from the diet .
  • Avoid pollution- Try not to go to areas where the level of air pollution is very high. Stay indoors as much as possible and wear a mask when going out. Apart from this, inhale steam so that the mucus layer in the respiratory tract does not become thick. Use an air purifier inside the house and also stay away from dust and dirt.
  • Do not smoke- If you smoke, COPD can become more severe. So do not smoke and also stay away from second-hand smoke.
  • Exercise- Do the right exercises after consulting your doctor. Focus on exercises and techniques that can help in increasing the capacity of the lungs . Doing this can bring a lot of changes in the life of a COPD patient.
  • Keep an inhaler with you- In COPD, the airways start getting blocked. Therefore, always keep an inhaler with you, so that it can be used immediately in case of an emergency.
  • Take vaccines- Take vaccines for diseases like pneumonia and flu to prevent them. These diseases can make COPD more serious. So take vaccines for them.
  • Get enough sleep- Get at least 7-8 hours of sleep every day. Getting enough sleep helps in managing COPD.
