Officers of Sonapur Circle Office and police team reached Kochutoli village to remove encroachment by people of Muslim community. They were earlier removed from the encroached land, but they had returned there again. The villagers attacked the officers and policemen with sharp weapons, sticks and stones. Magistrate and several policemen injured
During this, a magistrate and 20 policemen were injured. Police vehicles were also damaged. Police say that firing had to be done to disperse the crowd. Two encroachers were injured in this. They were taken to the hospital, but they died. Those who died include protesters Zubair and Haider Ali.
More than 50 people claimed to be injured
The injured included Sonapur Circle Officer Nitul Khatniar, Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) Mrinal Deka and Sonapur police station incharge Hirak Jyoti Saikia. An eyewitness claimed that more than 50 people were injured. Additional security forces have been deployed in the village and senior civil and police officials have reached the spot. The situation is under control, but tension prevails in the entire area.
