New Delhi. Union Home Minister Amit Shah will on Monday review the security situation in Manipur, which has been witnessing ethnic violence for over a year. Senior officials of the central and state governments and other security forces will attend a high-level meeting in this regard, officials said. Manipur Governor Anusuiya Uikey met Shah here on Sunday and the two are understood to have discussed the current situation in the state.
Ethnic violence broke out in Manipur on May 3, 2023 after a tribal solidarity march in the hill districts of the state demanding Scheduled Tribe status for the majority Meitei community. More than 220 people from the Kuki and Meitei communities and security forces have been killed in the violence that has continued since then. Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat on June 10 expressed concern over the lack of peace in Manipur even after a year.
Mohan Bhagwat had expressed concern about Manipur
Addressing volunteers in Nagpur, Bhagwat said, 'Manipur has been waiting for peace to be established for the last one year. Ten years ago there was peace in Manipur. It seemed that the gun culture had ended there, but suddenly violence has increased in the state.'
'Manipur's situation to be considered on priority basis'
He had said that the situation in Manipur has to be considered on priority. There is a need to rise above election rhetoric and focus on the problems facing the nation. The RSS chief said that the unrest either flared up or was instigated, but Manipur is burning and people are facing its heat.
