News Topical, Digital Desk : Braj Mandal is the place where Lord Krishna performed many childhood pastimes. All these places, including Vrindavan, Mathura, Gokul, Nandgaon, Barsana, and Govardhan, are part of the 84 Kos (Braj Chaurasi Kos Yatra), where Lord Krishna spent his childhood. The Vedas and Puranas ascribe great importance to this place. Let's learn more about it.

Importance of travel

The Varaha Purana describes the approximately 66 billion pilgrimage sites on Earth, which reside in Braj during Chaturmas. Therefore, the 84-kos circumambulation is performed during Chaturmas. It is also said that once Mother Yashoda and Nand Baba expressed their desire to visit the four holy places.

Lord Krishna then summoned all the pilgrimage sites to Braj so that he could visit them. It is believed that any devotee who undertakes the 84 Kos Parikrama with a true heart is freed from the cycle of 8.4 million births and attains salvation. Furthermore, undertaking this pilgrimage also destroys all one's sins.

When is this trip done?

The 84-kos circumambulation is primarily performed during Adhik Maas and Chaturmas. Furthermore, the months of Chaitra and Vaishakh also hold special significance. The Parikrama is performed once a year, from Chaitra Purnima to Vaishakh Purnima. Some people also begin the circumambulation after Vijaya Dashami in the month of Ashwin. Shaivite and Vaishnavite communities have different times for this circumambulation, according to their respective beliefs.

Other important things about the trip

The 84-kos Parikrama can be completed in two ways: on foot or by vehicle. Most people prefer to do this on foot. It can take a month or more to complete the journey on foot. The journey ends at the same place where it began. During this Parikrama, one passes through approximately 1,100 lakes and 36 forests, groves, hills, and mountains associated with the pastimes of Lord Krishna.
