News Topical, Digital Desk : The government has initiated the procurement process for 30 Low-Level Light-Weight Radars (LLLR) to strengthen the Indian Army's air defence system. Request for Proposal (RFP) was issued on Friday.
According to sources, the procurement will be made from indigenous companies under the 'Fast Track Procurement Process', with a budget of approximately ₹725 crore. According to technical specifications, the Advanced Low-Level Light-Weight Radar will provide continuous 3-D surveillance of both friendly and enemy aerial targets.
30 new radars to be procured for the Indian Army
The RFP also mentions that the radar should be capable of detecting a variety of aerial targets at a range of at least 50 kilometres and will provide wide beam coverage in terms of altitude.
According to the RFP document available on the Army website, the Defence Ministry is interested in purchasing 30 LLLR (I) and two CRV (Classroom Variant) of LLLR (I).
The aim is to strengthen the air defense system
LLLR(I) stands for Low-Level Light-Weight Radar (Improved), while CRV is the version used for training purposes.
The document envisages these radars as advanced surveillance systems for airspace scanning, capable of detecting and tracking a variety of aerial threats, including targets with low radar cross section (RCS).
Preference will be given to OEA
The vendor must also ensure integration of these radars with existing air defense control and reporting systems. The government has invited responses to the RFP only from original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) or their authorized vendors.
If the same equipment is offered by more than one party, priority will be given to OEA. The document clarifies that the end user of the equipment will be the Indian Army.
