Delhi News: Despite the ban, fireworks were burst on Diwali night in the capital Delhi. Many people became victims of accidents. 280 cases of burns due to firecrackers were reported in hospitals. Officials gave information on Friday. They said that the highest number of 117 patients reached Safdarjung Hospital, which has the country's largest 'burn unit', on Thursday. On the second number, 48 cases of burns were reported in All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and 19 cases of burns were reported in Lok Nayak Jaiprakash Hospital.
According to hospital authorities, out of 280 patients, 102 had minor burn injuries. 15 patients with severe burn injuries were admitted. They said that 20 patients were children below 12 years of age. According to the hospital administration, 86 cases were due to burns caused by firecrackers and 31 due to burns caused by diyas. Five people needed surgery due to serious injuries in the hand caused by firecrackers. On October 30, a day before Diwali, 18 cases of burn injuries were reported in Safdarjung Hospital. Nine patients were admitted.
More than 280 patients reached Delhi hospitals
Nine people were treated for minor burns. Professor Dr. Reema Dada, in-charge of AIIMS media cell, said that 48 cases were registered in the plastic, reconstructive and burn surgery department from 7 pm on Diwali to 7 am on November 1. The number of burn cases due to firecrackers was 32. Out of 48 patients, 27 were badly burnt while 21 suffered minor injuries. 19 patients were shifted to ICU, out of which 11 are in critical condition.
Dr Dada said patients have reported burns due to reasons other than firecrackers. 35 cases were reported from Delhi, eight from the National Capital Region (NCR) and five from outside the NCR. Eye injuries were also a cause of concern this Diwali. AIIMS' RP Ophthalmology Centre recorded 50 cases of eye injuries on October 31 and an additional 30 cases till November 1. Delhi government's largest Lok Nayak Jaiprakash Hospital treated 19 burn cases. The burns were reported during Diwali celebrations.
