News Topical, Digital Desk : Nupur Bora, a woman officer of the Assam Civil Service (ACS), has been arrested on corruption charges. During the investigation, officials found disproportionate assets at her home.
Nupur Bora is a 2019 batch officer. She has been under the Special Vigilance Cell's surveillance for the past six months. She is accused of embezzling land deals and accepting large sums of money. Recently, raids were conducted at her premises, during which police recovered large amounts of cash and jewelry.
What was found in the raid?
- Over Rs 92.50 lakh cash recovered from Guwahati house
- Jewellery worth approximately Rs 1.5 crore recovered
- Rs 10 lakh cash recovered from rented house in Barpeta
The immense wealth that this officer acquired in just five years of service surprised everyone from the government to the general public.
What did the Chief Minister say?
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took a strong stance on the matter, saying that Nupur Bora, while serving as Circle Officer in Barpeta, transferred land belonging to Hindus to suspicious individuals. He also stated that such corruption would not be tolerated, especially in minority-dominated areas.
Chief Minister Sarma said, "We have found that he has amassed assets 400 times more than his known sources of income. We believe that mere suspension or dismissal from service will not suffice. We must ensure punishment through the legal process." He also appealed to the public to immediately report any official demanding a bribe.
The scope of investigation has been widened
Police also raided the home of Surjit Deka, an employee of Nupur Bora's. Investigators suspect that the two conspired to purchase and sell several parcels of land in Barpeta. Their bank statements and all land transactions are now being examined.
