News Topical, Digital Desk: Food delivery platform Zomato removes around 5,000 gig workers every month for fraud, while around 1.5 to 2 lakh workers voluntarily leave the platform.

Deepinder Goyal, founder and CEO of Zomato's parent company, Eternal, stated that gig work is typically viewed as temporary employment for those who leave the platform on their own.

What's the big deal in the podcast?
In a video podcast with YouTuber Raj Shamani, Goyal said that those who leave voluntarily often consider gig work to be temporary.

Goyal's statement, made in a video podcast with YouTuber Raj Shamani, comes at a time when gig workers at several quick commerce and food delivery platforms, including Zomato, recently went on strike on December 31st to protest working conditions. Gig worker unions have raised issues such as lack of social security and low wages. Responding to these allegations, Goyal said that the company provides insurance cover in case of death of a gig worker in an accident and also offers a job to the family. He claimed that if a person works 8-10 hours a day, six days a week, they can easily earn more than ₹25,000.

Customers also commit fraud. Goyal also pointed out that not only gig workers, but in some cases, customers also commit fraud. To address such issues, Zomato has developed an internal system that rates both customers and delivery partners. In the event of a complaint, the credibility of both parties is assessed based on this system. However, they acknowledged that in 50 to 70% of such disputes, the company suffers losses.
