News Topical, Digital Desk : Violence has erupted in Karbi Anglong, Assam. Internet services have been shut down in the state. So far, two people have died and several others have been injured in the incident.

Why did violence erupt in Assam?

In Assam, residents of the Village Grazing Reserve (VGR) and Commercial Grazing Reserve (PGR) areas want to evict outsiders from the area, calling them encroachers. This conflict is ongoing between these two groups. These areas are protected under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution to protect tribal land rights.

In this case, clashes broke out between these two groups in Kheroni and Dongkamkam areas of Karbi Anglong, due to which the police had to lathi charge and tear gas was also used on the protesters.

Two people have died and 45 injured so far in the violence that broke out in Karbi Anglong, including 38 police security personnel who sustained injuries.

Authorities have invoked Section 163 of the Indian Penal Code (BNSS), which prohibits gatherings of five or more people, rallies, torchlight processions, the use of loudspeakers, and has also imposed a complete traffic blockade between 5 pm and 6 am.

How did the violence erupt?

Nine people on hunger strike were called in by police for medical treatment. This incident only intensified the protests. Rumors of their detention spread, sparking public anger and widespread protests

On Monday, December 22, protesters set fire to the ancestral home of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) chief Tuliram Ronghang. Several shops, motorcycles, and public property were also vandalized during the protests.

Appeal to people to maintain peace

Inspector General of Police Akhilesh Kumar Singh said that discussions are underway with the public to maintain peace. People have also been urged to seek legal recourse to file their complaints and to refrain from taking the law into their own hands.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is also closely monitoring the situation in Karbi Anglong. He announced the deployment of additional security forces to the area and expressed condolences to the families of the deceased.
