Tensions escalate after Trump's threat
The US and Iran have had a deep animosity dating back to the 1979 Islamic Revolution and the Tehran embassy hostage crisis. Tensions have escalated since Trump threatened to retaliate against Iran's violent crackdown on the widespread protests that began in late December 2025.
In view of the growing protests in Iran, Trump has deployed the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln and other military ships in the Gulf region since January.
