UP: How much does the scholarship scheme benefit students of backward classes and why did Prayagraj get top position

News Topical, Digital Desk : The main objective of the Uttar Pradesh Scholarship Scheme is to give an opportunity to study to the children belonging to poor economic background. The scheme is for students whose parents' annual income is Rs 2 lakh or less. The Yogi government has made the process of distribution of scholarship absolutely transparent and easy.

Uttar Pradesh government is working effectively continuously in the field of education under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. The scholarship schemes of Yogi government have been very effective in providing financial assistance to students for higher education especially to students belonging to the backward classes. The Post-Matric Scholarship/Fee Reimbursement Scheme for Backward Classes, launched by the government, has emerged as a new ray of hope for millions of students. Prayagraj district leads the state in terms of the number of beneficiaries.

Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh has the maximum number of scholarships with more than 1.69 lakh students getting scholarship. This scheme gives a strong platform to the students belonging to the economically weaker sections to pursue education. The initiative of the Yogi government has directly benefitted millions of families and made the path to higher education easier for students.

Ghazipur: Scholarships distributed to over 1.34 lakh students

In 2025-26, more than 27 lakh students received scholarships under the Backward Classes Post-Matric Scholarship Scheme. Scholarships to 1,69,489 students received in Prayagraj. With over 1.34 lakh students getting scholarships, Ghazipur district stood second after Prayagraj. The scheme has benefited 1.19 lakh students in Azamgarh. In Jaunpur, more than 1.15 lakh students and in Varanasi, 88,859 students have been covered under the scheme. The figures reveal that the scholarship scheme is making a large impact in different districts of the state.

Transgenders also got help along with students.

According to scholarship distribution data, there were 472,764 scholarships awarded to female students in grades 11-12. There were also 380,667 scholarships awarded to male students and two scholarships awarded to transgender students. "1,001,084 women, 931,906 men and eight transgender students have been given scholarships at higher education institutions." Post-Matric Scholarship Scheme is not only limited to intermediate level but also covers higher education and professional courses. Students studying in class 11 and 12 and students pursuing professional courses like B.Tech, MBBS, MBA, BA, B.Sc, B.Com, ITI and Polytechnic are also getting scholarships.

Transparent and simple scholarship distribution process

The main aim of this scheme is to provide an opportunity to the children of economically weaker sections of the society to pursue education. The scheme is for students whose parents’ annual income is below ₹2 lakh. The distribution process of scholarships under the Chief Minister Yogi government has been made fully transparent and simple. Students are encouraged to apply online through the Scholarship Management System website making the process faster and easier. Once approved, the scholarship funds will be directly deposited into the beneficiaries’ bank accounts.

The scholarship scheme is benefitting a large number of students.

Umesh Pratap Singh, director of backward classes welfare department said that the aim of the Yogi government is that no student in the state should be deprived of education due to financial constraints. The benefits of these schemes are being extended to a large number of students and other qualifying groups. The state government is working with full commitment to ensure that education reaches every individual in society, he said. The Post-Matric Scholarship Scheme is designed to offer substantial financial support to students from economically weaker sections for pursuing their education.
