News Topical, Digital Desk : Two senior Supreme Court judges resigned on Thursday in protest of a new law amending Pakistan's constitution. The new law expands the military's powers while curtailing the Supreme Court's authority. The Supreme Court will now be able to hear only property and criminal cases.

A separate Constitutional Court will be set up to monitor and hear cases related to the Constitution. Supreme Court judges Justice Mansoor Ali Shah and Justice Athar Minallah resigned from their posts just hours after President Asif Ali Zardari gave assent to the 27th Constitutional Amendment Bill passed by Parliament.

What was the allegation?

He has alleged that the new law is against the spirit of the Constitution and will undermine the independence of the judiciary. Justice Shah wrote in his resignation letter that this amendment is a major attack on Pakistan's Constitution. It will end the Supreme Court's administrative control over the judiciary. This will cause significant harm to the country's democracy. He finds himself unable to function under the new system, and therefore is resigning.

Justice Minallah, however, stated that he had sworn to protect the Constitution, but he could not remain in office while it was being harmed. This was the greatest harm to the Constitution that Parliament had inflicted in his memory. The Constitution Amendment Bill was passed by a two-thirds majority in the National Assembly on Wednesday, despite strong opposition from the opposition. The Senate had previously passed the bill on Monday.
