News Topical, Digital Desk : Geoffrey Hinton, known as the " Godfather " of Artificial Intelligence ( AI), has issued a serious and profound warning. He said that the tech world's most powerful billionaires are advancing AI at a pace that could devastate economies, destroy millions of jobs, and unleash forces that humans may be unable to control.
Direct target on tech billionaires
Speaking with US Senator Bernie Sanders at Georgetown University in Washington, Hinton said that big names like Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, Larry Ellison and Jeff Bezos are spending billions of dollars on AI and robotics without understanding the risks.
According to Hinton, these companies are increasing automation so rapidly that the system itself could turn against them. He said , " If people don't have jobs, how will they buy things? To whom will the companies sell? "
Hinton believes this transformation will not be like previous industrial revolutions. This time, the number of jobs lost will not be nearly as many as the new ones created. According to him, when AI becomes as intelligent as or more intelligent than humans, it will be able to perform almost every task. He said, " People who lose their jobs will be left without new work. Whatever they can do, AI will be able to do it better. "
Call-center jobs, basic office work, entry-level technical roles, and simple analytical jobs will be the first to be eliminated. In the long run, economies could see widespread unemployment.
The threat of super-intelligent AI
Hinton warned that today's AI systems already know thousands of times more than any human and are learning at a much faster rate. Many of the world's leading scientists believe that AI will soon become more intelligent than humans, and no one knows what will happen then.
He said that in the future, AI may develop sub-goals such as protecting itself or increasing control over itself, making it difficult to stop. According to Hinton, we have seen examples where AI tries to deceive humans who are trying to stop it.
One of Hinton's most frightening predictions concerns warfare. He predicted that AI— drones and human-like robots— would make wars worth fighting without losing soldiers. This would remove any political pressure on rich countries, as their soldiers would not die. He said, " Rich countries can attack poor countries, and only the poor will die. When the coffins don't return, there will be no pressure on governments. "
Deepfakes and the election crisis
Hinton said that AI will soon create videos and audio that will be impossible to distinguish between real and fake. This could undermine the electoral process and public trust. He explained that AI will always fall short in detecting fakes, so the only solution lies in systems like digital signatures that can identify genuine videos .
Both Bernie Sanders and Hinton said that the world's governments haven't yet implemented even basic regulations on AI — no safety testing, no biological threat prevention, no transparency requirements. Hinton said that we need to stop before building systems that are smarter than us. Right now, we don't have a way to live safely with them.
