
News Topical, Digital Desk : Following the violence in Leh, the government arrested Sonam Wangchuk. He is currently incarcerated in Jodhpur jail. His wife, Geetanjali, has filed a petition in the Supreme Court challenging his arrest, which is scheduled to be heard today.
Sonam Wangchuk was detained on September 26th last month. A case has been registered against him under the National Security Act (NSA). It was also claimed that Sonam Wangchuk had links with the Pakistani intelligence agency ISI.
Sonam Wangchuk's wife approached the Supreme Court on October 2 under the writ of habeas corpus under Article 32 of the Constitution. The Supreme Court will hear the case today.
4 killed in Leh violence
It should be noted that violence erupted suddenly in Leh on September 24th. Protesters also burned down the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) headquarters. Police investigations revealed that Sonam Wangchuk played a major role in inciting the violence. His inflammatory speeches escalated the protests. To quell the violence, police resorted to open fire, resulting in the deaths of four people.
Sonam Wangchuk arrested after 2 days
A curfew was imposed in Leh, and internet services were shut down in many areas. Sonam Wangchuk was suspected of being a major driver of this entire incident. Consequently, police arrested him just two days after the violence broke out. He was also accused of receiving foreign funding through two NGOs.
Sonam demanded an investigation
Sonam Wangchuk has been imprisoned in Jodhpur jail. Sonam has appealed to the people of Leh to restore peace. He has also demanded a judicial inquiry into the violence. Sharing a post on Facebook, Sonam Wangchuk wrote, "I am completely fine physically and mentally. Thank you for all your prayers. I express my heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims."
