News Topical, Digital Desk : A 20-year-old student at a marine engineering institute in Pune has died. Reports indicate that a basketball backboard fell on him, causing serious head injuries. He was immediately rushed to the hospital, but could not be saved.
Went for a morning walk on campus
Vishal Verma , a second-year student at Tolani Maritime Institute, was out for a morning walk on campus on Sunday morning. He was hanging from a basketball hoop and doing pull-ups when the entire frame collapsed on him, causing profuse bleeding from his head. Fellow students and staff on campus immediately rushed him to the hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
B.Tech course was to be completed in 2028
According to Vishal's LinkedIn account, he was from Basti, Uttar Pradesh. He enrolled at the Pune-based institute in 2024. His four-year B.Tech course was scheduled to be completed in 2028. Dr. Sanjeet, principal of the Tolani Maritime Institute, called the incident "deeply sad." He said they would investigate what went wrong.
Police said they were investigating whether the frame was rusted or if there was a major defect in the fittings. Inspector Santosh Patil said a case has been registered and the investigation is ongoing.
