The calamity struck after heavy rainfall led to landslides that blocked the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH-44) and inundated several localities. Numerous homes and vehicles were damaged, and essential services were disrupted. The situation prompted the suspension of traffic on the highway, leaving thousands stranded .​

Public Protest for Immediate Relief

As CM Abdullah's convoy traversed the affected areas, local residents, expressing their distress, stopped the vehicles to voice their demands. They called for urgent evacuation of vulnerable groups, including the elderly, women, and children, and requested the provision of food, water, and medical assistance. Additionally, they sought the restoration of connectivity and the implementation of long-term measures such as early warning systems and infrastructure upgrades to prevent future tragedies .​

Government's Response

In response to the crisis, CM Abdullah expressed profound anguish over the situation and assured the public that rescue and relief operations were underway. He stated that the administration was in touch with local authorities to ensure immediate assistance and that a comprehensive review of restoration and repair plans would be conducted .​

Political leaders, including Dr. Farooq Abdullah and Omar Abdullah, have urged the Jammu and Kashmir administration to provide monetary compensation, temporary shelters, and food supplies to affected families. They emphasized the need for a thorough assessment of the damage to crops and agricultural land, with compensation for farmers and horticulturists .​
