News Topical, Digital Desk : Heavy unseasonal rains in several areas of Jodhpur district on Wednesday (October 1) morning have exacerbated the hardships of farmers. Kharif crops stored in unirrigated areas of Bhopalgarh, Pipar, Bilara, Mandore, Osian, Tinwari, Bapini, Chamu, Sekhla, and Lohawat tehsils have been severely affected by the rain.
Farmers reported that the harvested millet, mung bean, moth bean, sesame, and cluster bean stalks left to dry in the fields were soaked in the rain, causing a significant portion of them to spoil. Tulsaram Sinwar, secretary of the Bharatiya Kisan Sangh, said, "The greatest damage has occurred in unirrigated areas. These farmers are completely dependent on the weather. Now, the risk of the harvested crops rotting or sprouting has increased."
Rain wreaks havoc in Mandis too
The heavy rain that began at 11 a.m. also changed the scene at the Bilara Agricultural Produce Market. Produce stored outdoors in the market yard was drenched by the rain. This caused disappointment among both farmers and traders. Tarpaulins were placed on the market premises to try to protect the grain.
Farmers say they were already struggling due to high costs and low yields. Now, the weather has ruined their hard work. Many farmers fear that if compensation and relief are not provided soon, their financial situation could worsen.
Farmers' demands from the government
The villagers have demanded that the government conduct a special survey to accurately assess the damage caused by the unseasonal rains and provide appropriate compensation. Tulsaram Sinwar said, "Farmers in unirrigated areas are completely dependent on the weather. Therefore, it is extremely important to fully assess the damage and provide compensation."
Farmers and traders are now expecting the government to take immediate action so that their hard work does not go waste and they can get some relief for the next crop.
