Yadgir: A case has been registered against Congress MLA Channareddy Tannur and his son Pampanagouda Tannur for allegedly abetting the suicide of a Dalit police sub-inspector in Karnataka, who committed suicide after he was transferred within seven months of his posting.
Home department sources said that after the matter escalated, the state government handed over its investigation to the CID. On the complaint of Parashuram's wife Shweta NV, a case was registered against the MLA and his son under various sections including insulting and abetting suicide. Shweta has alleged that the father-son duo had demanded Rs 30 lakh from her husband in exchange for not getting him transferred.
Was unhappy since the transfer
They claimed that Parashuram had been crying since the transfer and had told them that he was thinking of committing suicide. When pregnant Shweta went to her parents' home in Raichur for the delivery of her child, she found that Parashuram had been admitted to the hospital with bleeding from the nose and mouth. After the incident, members of the Dalit Sangharsh Samiti staged a protest by blocking the road demanding justice for Parashuram.
Shwetha also joined the protest. Speaking to the media, Shwetha alleged that the police department was supporting the MLA and not her husband. Reacting to the incident, Karnataka Home Minister G. Parameshwara said that he has ordered a thorough investigation into the case. However, he denied that it was a suicide.
Home Minister denied the incident of suicide
Minister Parameshwar told the media in Bengaluru that Parashuram did not commit suicide. He did not write any suicide note. His wife has complained that he was upset about the transfer. I will look into her allegation. That aspect will also be taken into consideration in the investigation. Parameshwar said that the police are investigating by collecting preliminary information.
Politics heated up over the incident
The incident has heated up politics in Karnataka. Opposition BJP and Janata Dal (Secular) criticised the government for forcing good officers to commit suicide. Union Minister HD Kumaraswamy said at the start of the Mysore Chalo march jointly organised by BJP and JD (S) in Bengaluru that a police sub-inspector has committed suicide. Why did he do this? His wife alleges that the sub-inspector took this step because he could not pay a bribe of Rs 30 lakh to the MLA.
