Geetanjali J. Angmo is far more than a public figure in her husband's shadow; she is a trailblazing social entrepreneur and educator in her own right. As the founding CEO and Dean of the Himalayan Institute of Alternatives (HIAL) in Ladakh, she has been instrumental in reshaping education in high-altitude regions. Under her leadership, HIAL has pioneered sustainable development, including the creation of green, solar-heated campuses. Her innovative approach even extended to national service in 2021, when the institute developed solar-heated tents for the Indian Army, earning her widespread recognition and the prestigious government-led "Women Transforming India Award."
From Corporate Denmark to Grassroots Advocacy
Born into a Punjabi family in Balasore, Odisha, Geetanjali’s life has been a tapestry of diverse experiences. She holds a degree in Physics from Fakir Mohan University and an MBA from the Xavier Institute of Technology, Bhubaneswar. Before returning to India to dedicate her life to social causes, she spent 15 years navigating a successful corporate career primarily based in Denmark. Beyond her professional achievements, she is a multifaceted personality—a Chevening Fellow, a black-belt karate practitioner, and a trained dancer in both Odissi and Russian ballet. She is also a passionate teacher of Vedanta and the Gita, blending modern educational leadership with profound traditional wisdom.

This is not the first time Geetanjali has been the backbone of Sonam Wangchuk’s struggles. When the activist was detained last year during protests demanding statehood for Ladakh and inclusion in the Sixth Schedule, it was Geetanjali who relentlessly campaigned for his rights. She filed petitions in the Supreme Court and directly appealed to the President of India, documenting the grueling reality of traveling across distances just for short, 60-minute meetings during his confinement. Her resilience during those 170 days of struggle solidified her role as a key voice in the couple's shared fight for justice and regional development.
