NewsClick Under Fire: ED Flags ₹86-Cr Illegal Overseas Funds in SC

In a significant legal escalation over foreign financial inflows into digital media, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has filed a comprehensive fresh petition before the Supreme Court of India in the ongoing NewsClick case, challenging the news portal's corporate ownership structure and its service pacts with overseas entities. The federal financial investigation agency informed the apex court that NewsClick received illegal foreign funding amounting to approximately ₹86 crore, which was deliberately presented as legitimate commercial trade revenue and business earnings to circumvent statutory scrutiny. According to investigators, the arrangement was part of an orchestrated scheme to mask foreign donations as commercial investments and contractual service payments, bypassing the rigorous regulatory frameworks established for foreign contributions in the Indian news media sector. To substantiate its allegations of financial manipulation, the agency placed on record extensive documentation, including recovered electronic communications, banking trails, corporate regulatory filings, valuation reports, and corroborating witness statements.

The People's Dispatch Conduit: Sham Service Pacts and Overseas Fund Channels

A central pillar of the ED’s fresh submission centers on the operational and financial nexus between NewsClick and the international website People’s Dispatch. The investigating agency asserted before the Supreme Court that the platform was initially owned and controlled directly by the NewsClick team, during which a United States-based entity, the Justice and Education Fund (JEF), was paying NewsClick under the guise of uploading and managing content. Senior officials stated that this service arrangement did not represent a genuine commercial deal, but served as a financial conduit designed to regularly funnel foreign capital into NewsClick's accounts. According to the agency's filings, JEF formally took over ownership of People's Dispatch in April 2021, whereas prior to that transition, the terms, operational parameters, and editorial quality of the platform were dictated entirely by NewsClick's domestic team, exposing what the probe characterizes as an artificial commercial arrangement designed to disguise overseas patronage.

Internal Emails Expose Plot to Bypass MIB Clearances and Neville Roy Singham Links

The enforcement agency further presented internal communications demonstrating calculated efforts to evade Indian statutory permissions. The ED cited an email dated August 21, 2017, sent by the news portal’s former human resources head, Amit Chakraborty, which allegedly revealed that the firm's foundational documents were being altered to attract overseas capital without securing mandatory clearances from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB). Furthermore, a separate email trail from January 2018 demonstrated that rather than seeking statutory permission to receive foreign grants through a registered non-profit organization (NGO), a deliberate plan was hatched to absorb American investments by incorporating a private limited entity. Investigators noted that the case has widened its international scope as probes examine NewsClick’s ties to the Tricontinental network and funding streams associated with American tech entrepreneur Neville Roy Singham, specifically focusing on whether overseas resources were deployed to back specific agendas and fuel protests.
