The Central Water Commission (CWC) has released a report stating that more than 400 glacial lakes in India are showing worrying trends in their expansion and need to be monitored closely to avoid disaster.
Monthly monitoring of glacial lakes and water bodies continues
In the recently made public Monthly Monitoring Report of Glacial Lakes and Water Bodies for June 2025, the CWC said 432 glacial lakes spread across Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh have been marked for intensive monitoring due to their potential to cause flash and catastrophic floods.
Intensive monitoring of glacial lakes is needed
The report said that as per the Glacial Lake Atlas-2023, 432 glacial lakes (out of 681) located in India exhibit an increase in water area during the month of June 2025, and hence require intensive monitoring for disaster purposes.

These findings have come against the backdrop of widespread flooding across the country. At least seven people were killed in landslides triggered by heavy rains in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, while already flood-hit Punjab received torrential rains again on Monday, disrupting normal life and forcing closure of all schools and colleges.
Amid incessant rains in Jammu and Kashmir's Katra, the Mata Vaishno Devi pilgrimage remained suspended for the seventh consecutive day after 34 people were killed in a landslide on the yatra route last Tuesday.
This is the size of glacial lakes in India
According to the CWC report, the total area of glacial lakes in India is projected to increase from 1,917 hectares in 2011 to 2,508 hectares in 2025. This figure represents an increase of 30.83 per cent in area. However, only 55 out of 100 glacial lakes were considered for this interpretation.
