News Topical, Digital Desk : The Mahabharata contains many interesting and inspiring stories. It describes the conflict between the Kauravas and the Pandavas. Many powerful warriors participated in this war, including  Ashwatthama.  The story of Ashwatthama's birth is also divine. Let's learn more about it.

This is how Ashwathama was born

Ashwatthama was the son of Guru Dronacharya, known as the teacher of the Kauravas and Pandavas. According to legend, Guru Dronacharya traveled to various places and reached the Himalayas. There, he established a Shivalinga in a divine cave on the banks of the Tamasa River and performed penance. Lord Shiva was pleased with him and blessed him with a child.

Some time later, with the blessings of Lord Shiva, Dronacharya's wife Kripi gave birth to a beautiful and radiant son. Upon birth, Dronacharya's son cried with a loud voice, resembling that of a horse. This is described in this verse from the Mahabharata:

Albhat Gautami Putramashvatthamanmev Ch.
सा जात मत्रो व्यानद्द्याथाय्थावोच्चाः श्रवा हैः.
Tachchutvaantarhitam bhutamantarikshasthambaraveet.
Ashvasyevasya yat stham nadatah pradisho gatam.
Ashwatthamaiva baltoyam tasmannamna future.
Suten ten supreeto bhardwajasto bhavat.

The gem on Ashwatthama's forehead was divine.

The Mahabharata also describes Ashwatthama as being born with a divine gem embedded in his forehead. This gem provided him with protection and shielded him from weapons, disease, hunger, thirst, and fatigue.

Hence the curse

After the battle, Ashwatthama, seeking revenge for his father's death, attacked the Pandavas' camp and killed their sons. Ashwatthama also used the Brahmastra on Uttara's unborn child, but Lord Krishna saved her. For this sin, Lord Krishna took away the gem from Ashwatthama's forehead and cursed him to wander the earth with a forehead wound until the end of Kali Yuga.
