How people's growing obsession with internet media is affecting their lives was shown in recently released films like 'Control', 'Kho Gaye Hum Kahan'. The film 'Loveyaapa' was based on the test of mutual trust between a lover and his girlfriend when they exchange their mobile phones for a day.
Where can I watch the film?
Now 'Logout' explores the dangers of smartphone obsession and the pursuit of validation on internet media. Despite some flaws, the film, which will be released on ZEE5 on Friday, raises important issues.
What is the story?
The story is about internet media influencer Pratyush Dua (Babil Khan aka Praty). Pratyush, who lives away from his parents, is famous in the virtual world. His goal is to increase the number of his followers to ten million (one crore) so that he can get a big advertising deal. An obstacle in this is also his competitor influencer, who is not far away from this figure.
Pratyush makes a video with popular YouTuber Bhuvan Bam to increase his followers rapidly, but before uploading the video, he loses his mobile. When he logs in to his computer, his fan Sakshi (Nimisha Nair) tells him that he forgot his mobile in the cab.
Sakshi starts convincing him on the chat regarding the return of the mobile. Pratyush starts searching about her on the internet. From here the difference between online popularity and personal life starts to become visible.
How much substance is there in the story of the film?
The story written by Biswapati Sarkar is mostly set in Pratyush's room, with the computer screen being the main medium to unfold the events. Through Pratyush, director Amit Golani shows the competition among YouTubers and the mental pressure of getting the videos widely circulated, as he is wearing a fake identity.
He also shows the aspect of commentating with a fake identity and taking advantage of it. However, this competition could have been made more interesting.
In one scene, Pratyush goes to transfer money online but the OTP comes on his mobile. Sakshi asks for the phone password. After thinking a bit, he gives it to her, whereas he could have got the money online from his manager via GPay.
How can Pratyush, who is always online, be so backward here? This is disturbing. Pratyush's anxiety about getting a mobile is visible, but after knowing Sakshi's psychological condition, the director is unable to create a tense atmosphere. Music has been used to maintain the pace of events.
How is the acting?
The burden of the film rests on Babil Khan's shoulders. The camera remains on him for most of the time. Late actor Irrfan's son proves that he is capable of playing intense roles. He conveys Pratyush's stress, helplessness and desperation in a restrained manner.
