News Topical, Digital Desk : The CBI on Saturday arrested Lieutenant Colonel Deepak Kumar Sharma, posted in the Department of Defence Production under the Defence Ministry, on charges of accepting a bribe of Rs 3 lakh from a Bengaluru-based company.

The agency seized ₹2.23 crore in cash and ₹3 lakh in bribe money from his Delhi residence, and ₹10 lakh from his wife's residence in Sri Ganganagar. A person named Vinod Kumar, who paid the bribe on behalf of a company, was also arrested.

The CBI said that based on information received from reliable sources, it registered a case on December 19 against Deepak Kumar Sharma and his wife, Colonel Kajal Bali, who is the commanding officer of the 16 Infantry Division Ordnance Unit based in Sriganganagar, Rajasthan.

According to the CBI, Deepak Sharma is accused of criminally conspiring with representatives of various private companies involved in the manufacture and export of defense products and engaging in corrupt and illegal activities. The agency alleges that Deepak Sharma accepted bribes from these companies in exchange for providing them with undue favors.

The CBI had received information about the bribe payment from a Bengaluru-based company, which was being managed by Rajiv Yadav and Ravjeet Singh.

The agency found that both Singh and Yadav were in regular touch with Lt Col Sharma and in connivance with him were trying to obtain undue favours for their company from various government departments and ministries.

A person named Vinod Kumar paid a bribe of Rs 3 lakh to Deepak Kumar Sharma on behalf of the said company on December 18. The CBI produced both the arrested accused – Deepak Sharma and Vinod Kumar – before a special court, which remanded them in CBI custody till December 23.
