What problems can poor menstrual hygiene cause?
- UTI and Infections- If the pads are not clean or not changed on time, bacteria can grow rapidly, causing very painful infections. In some cases, it can also cause reproductive health problems.
- Risk of rashes and skin irritation - Wearing the same pad for a long time or using cloth etc. instead of pad can cause itching, fungal infection or rashes.
- Risk of HPV infection – Repeated infections can cause persistent inflammation in the cervix, which increases the risk of serious infections like HPV.
How to take care of menstrual hygiene?
The Health Ministry has also given information about this through a tweet, which states-
- Use sanitary pads or clean, dry and sun-dried cotton cloth during periods.
- Wash hands thoroughly with soap before changing the cloth or pad and clean your hands after that too.
- Keep changing the cloth or pad from time to time. Do not use the same pad for more than 5-6 hours.
- While changing the pad or cloth, wash your private parts with clean water.
- Maintain cleanliness, take proper diet and take rest.
- Dispose of the used pad safely in a dustbin. Burning it or throwing it in the open harms the environment. Also, diseases can occur.
