State Bank of India to Hire Up to 12,000 Employees, Expand Branch Network, and Offload 1% Stake in Landmark NSE IPO

The State Bank of India (SBI), the nation's largest public sector banking institution, is gearing up for a monumental expansion phase. According to official announcements by SBI Chairman C.S. Setty, the banking behemoth is preparing to execute a massive recruitment drive, targeting between 11,000 and 12,000 new appointments across its clerical and officer cadres for the financial year 2026-27. Alongside bolstering its workforce to meet institutional demands, the bank has unveiled aggressive plans to expand its physical footprint by adding hundreds of new branches and monetizing a portion of its holdings in the highly anticipated National Stock Exchange (NSE) initial public offering.

Workforce Expansion and Cadre-Wise Hiring Strategy

Addressing the bank's human resource roadmap, Chairman C.S. Setty confirmed that SBI aims to finalize approximately 12,000 recruitments by the end of the current financial year, though the final count may experience minor adjustments based on natural retirements and evolving operational needs. This upcoming drive follows a massive hiring cycle in fiscal year 2025-26, during which the bank inducted a staggering 25,633 personnel—comprising 4,640 officers, 19,340 associates, and 1,653 contractual employees—alongside roughly 1,500 specialist IT officers. While last year required heavy technical onboarding, the 2027 recruitment focus will pivot primarily toward strengthening frontline customer service and administrative bandwidth through clerical and officer cadre placements. As of March 2026, SBI's total employee headcount stood at a robust 2.45 lakh professionals.

Branch Network Growth and Strategic Geographic Penetration

In tandem with workforce additions, SBI is moving forward with a major retail expansion strategy. The bank plans to add between 200 to 2,500 net new branches during fiscal year 2026-27. While SBI already commands the largest banking network in the country, leadership has identified high-growth urban corridors, newly developing residential colonies, and commercial hubs where banking demand is surging. This targeted branch rollout will run parallel to ongoing internal branch rationalization efforts to optimize operational efficiency and maximize customer reach across diverse districts.

Monetizing Investments: SBI to Offload 1% Stake in Historic NSE IPO

In a major financial update, Chairman Setty also shed light on SBI’s strategy surrounding the prospective ₹30,000 crore Initial Public Offering (IPO) of the National Stock Exchange (NSE), which is poised to become India's largest public issue to date. Currently, SBI holds a 3.23% stake in the exchange, while its subsidiary, SBI Capital Markets Limited, commands an additional 4.33%. Under the proposed IPO blueprint, SBI plans to dilute approximately 0.65% and SBI Capital Markets will offload about 0.35%, collectively shedding roughly 1% of their equity holdings, though final allocations may flex depending on broader shareholder participation. This divestment places the banking titan to reap substantial capital gains from what is expected to eclipse previous market landmarks like Hyundai Motor India, LIC, and Paytm.
