A major public health scare has emerged in India following an urgent regulatory alert issued by the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) regarding a suspected batch of counterfeit and sub-standard anti-rabies vaccines. Authorities have flagged specific vials of the widely used Abhayrab vaccine recovered from the national capital, sparking widespread panic among patients and healthcare providers. With rabies claiming thousands of lives annually across the country, the circulation of fake life-saving immunizations has prompted a high-level investigation by law enforcement and drug regulators to trace the origin and distribution network of the fraudulent stock.

The Investigation: Sub-Standard Potency and Delhi Seizures

The controversy centers around Abhayrab batch number KE25012. According to regulatory officials, enforcement teams recovered several vaccine vials from an unlicensed premises located in Mukherjee Nagar, Delhi. Following standard protocols, the seized samples were dispatched to the Central Drugs Laboratory in Kasauli for rigorous evaluation.

Testing confirmed that the samples miserably failed the required potency tests, prompting authorities to declare the batch as "Not of Standard Quality." Subsequent police action led to the arrest of four individuals, while investigating agencies work frantically to determine how far the illicit consignment has traveled across domestic markets.

Manufacturer Clarification: 17 Major Discrepancies Found in Counterfeit Vials

Indian Immunologicals Limited (IIL), the legitimate manufacturer of the Abhayrab vaccine, has issued a formal clarification stating unequivocally that the recovered vials were never manufactured by the company. Upon comparing the seized stock with original company records and genuine samples, manufacturer representatives uncovered a staggering 17 distinct discrepancies.

Critical differences were identified across multiple parameters, including product packaging, labeling, QR codes, cap colors, licensing information, and box details. The manufacturer confirmed that while the original, genuine batch of KE25012 comprised 83,370 legally distributed vials through authorized channels, the seized products are blatant counterfeits illegally pushed into circulation.

Regulatory Crackdown and Prior Incidents of Fake Vaccines

In response to the alarming findings, the DCGI has instructed all state drug controllers to maintain heightened vigilance, monitor local distribution channels closely, and immediately pull suspicious stocks of batch KE25012 off shelves.

This distressing incident marks the second time in recent years that counterfeit Abhayrab batches have been detected. In January 2025, the company had flagged a similar issue with batch KA24014, which subsequently triggered international health advisories and travel alerts across the United States, the UK, and Australia for travelers returning from India.
