News Topical, Digital Desk : In the wake of escalating tensions with Pakistan following the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, the Indian Navy is set to strengthen its maritime might by inducting its second advanced warship - INS Tamal. According to reports, the 3,900-tonne frigate, built at Russia's renowned Yantar shipyard, is expected to be officially handed over to India in Leningrad within a month. The delivery comes after the successful induction of the first warship of the series, INS Tushil, which was commissioned by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh during his visit to Russia on December 9, 2024.

The acquisition of these frigates is part of a comprehensive Indo-Russian defence deal signed in October 2016, under which India committed to buy four advanced Krivak-III class frigates. The first two, including INS Tamal, are being bought from Russia for around Rs 8,000 crore. The other two - Triput and Tavsya, are under construction at Goa Shipyard Limited through a technology transfer deal, estimated to cost around Rs 13,000 crore. These state-of-the-art frigates are designed for extensive blue-water operations and are equipped with a range of modern weapon systems. They are capable of conducting missions in all four domains of naval warfare.

Key features of INS Tamal

INS Tamal is capable of moving at a speed of 30 knots (about 55 km/h). Along with this, one INS Tamal is capable of protecting and monitoring the borders every 3 thousand kilometers. Let us tell you that the name Tamal means sword. It reflects the aggressive and strategic growth of the ship. Currently INS Tamal has completed its tests and is undergoing many other tests in Russia. After this phase, the process of delivery of this frigate will move forward. Let us tell you that INS Tamal is an amazing frigate. It also includes BrahMos supersonic cruise missile and surface-to-air missile system. Apart from this, this ship is also equipped with anti-submarine torpedoes and rocket launchers for underwater warfare.
