News Topical, Digital Desk : India has made a historic leap in defence exports. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Sunday flagged off the first consignment of Pinaka guided rocket systems for Armenia from a facility in Nagpur.

The Pinaka multi-barrel rocket launcher is known for its accuracy and long range. Its various variants can engage targets up to 75 kilometers, with the most recently tested version reaching a range of 120 kilometers. This system, while a powerful addition to the Indian Army, is now becoming a preferred choice for foreign buyers.

India's defence exports set new records

Speaking on the occasion, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh said that the export of Pinaka missiles, manufactured at Solar Defence and Aerospace Limited's facility, has begun. This demonstrates the strength of the Indian defense industry. He emphasized, “India is no longer just an importer, but is rapidly becoming an exporter.”

Ten years ago, India's defense exports were less than ₹1,000 crore. Now, this figure has reached a record ₹24,000 crore. Similarly, domestic defense production has increased from ₹46,425 crore in 2014 to ₹1.51 lakh crore.

The role of the private sector has increased

The Defense Minister particularly praised the growing participation of the private sector. He stated that the rapid progress made possible by the involvement of private companies. Weapon systems like Pinaka are the result of this collaboration, which are now making India proud in the global market.

Big deal with Armenia

In September 2022, Armenia signed a deal with India worth approximately ₹2,000 crore (approximately $250 million). The deal included four Pinaka multi-barrel rocket launcher batteries, anti-tank rockets, ammunition, and other equipment. The agreement also included guided rockets, which enhance precision strike capabilities.

Under this deal, deliveries of the first unguided Pinaka system began in July 2023 and were completed by November 2024. Now, the first shipment of guided Pinaka rockets has been dispatched from Nagpur. This marks a significant step for Armenia.

How much has Pinaka changed?

The Pinaka initially had a range of 37.5 kilometers. Over time, it has been continuously improved. Currently, the Indian Army has inducted the Pinaka Mk-I Enhanced (EPRS) after successful testing in April 2022, which can strike targets at ranges exceeding 75 kilometers.

In December 2025, a new rocket with a range of 120 kilometers was successfully tested. These rockets will be able to be fired from existing launchers, which currently have ranges of 40 kilometers and 75+ kilometers. The Army is now considering a large procurement proposal worth approximately ₹2,500 crore.

Increased interest in other countries as well

Armenia is the first confirmed buyer, but demand for the Pinaka system is growing. Some countries in Southeast Asia, as well as European countries like France, are also showing keen interest in the weapon. India is now emerging as a strong exporter in the defense sector, and Pinaka is a prime example of this.
